The Water For Climate project is helping the people across Rwanda have access to clean water. Although water may seem like a basic right many communities in Rwanda do not have easy access to drinking water. Most people boil their water on inefficient, wood fueled three-stones to purify and even with this method the purification is not necessarily effective. When children drink contaminated water, they risk severe illness – and even death – from water-borne diseases. In addition, this process of sanitizing places pressure on trees and forests, releases greenhouse emissions, and also creates unhealthy indoor smoke that leads to respiratory problems for household inhabitants.

Our solution is working together with our partner South Pole to fix and maintain boreholes. The boreholes are dug 100m deep that bring fresh clean water to the surface through a hand pump. By providing an alternative to boiling water for purification, the project significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions as well as deforestation pressures on surrounding forests where firewood is sourced. The locals benefit from cleaner water and less air pollution in the family home, improving health. Less time is spent collecting wood and boiling water in big dangerous containers, freeing up women's time for income generating activities or household tasks.
